Product Description

Hydroxypropyl cyclodextrins are modified cyclic oligosaccharides derived from native β- and γ-cyclodextrin through controlled hydroxypropylation with propylene oxide. The substitution breaks crystallinity, delivering an amorphous, freely water-soluble powder while preserving the iconic toroidal cavity—hydrophobic interior, hydrophilic exterior. This architecture enables reversible host–guest complexation of poorly water-soluble actives without altering their molecular identity.

Unlike unmodified cyclodextrins, hydroxypropyl derivatives show markedly higher aqueous solubility and lower surface activity, making them preferred inclusion carriers in topical formulations, nutraceuticals, and functional food systems.

Why Formulators Choose Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrins
  • Solubility enhancement – Encapsulates lipophilic molecules inside the hydrophobic cavity, increasing apparent water solubility of actives by 10–1,000× depending on guest fit.
  • Stability protection – Shields sensitive ingredients from oxidation, hydrolysis, and UV-induced degradation during storage and use.
  • Controlled & sustained release – Complex dissociation kinetics enable gradual active release rather than burst exposure.
  • Sensory masking – Sequesters volatile off-notes, bitterness, and astringency in flavored food and oral-care formats.
  • Compatibility – Low irritation profile versus parent cyclodextrins; widely adopted in leave-on skincare and rinse-off cosmetics alike.
Formulation note: Inclusion efficiency depends on cavity size match—β-derivative (cavity ~0.78 nm) suits mid-sized aromas, vitamins, and polyphenols; γ-derivative (~0.95 nm) accommodates bulkier terpenes, carotenoids, and macrocyclic actives.
Typical Applications
Industry Use Case
Skincare & Cosmetics Stabilize retinoids, essential oils, curcumin, and botanical extracts in serums, creams, and sheet masks
Nutraceuticals & Food Mask bitter notes of flavonoids, CoQ10, omega fatty acids; improve dispersion in beverages and gummies
Oral & Personal Care Reduce volatility of flavor oils; protect actives in mouthwash, toothpaste, and scalp toners
Analytical & Lab Chiral recognition media, reference standard for complexation studies
Handling & Storage

Store in original tightly closed container in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight and humidity. Avoid prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. Rotate stock using first-expired-first-out (FEFO) practice to maintain complexation capacity.
